Friends, Frenchies, and assistance needed

I'm excited cause I am working on something new and secret! Actually it's only kind of secret. If you like stories about girls then you might like it. Here are two girls who are in my kind of secret project:

Yes, it is my lovely friends Emli and Christine! They've been on my blog a lot lately. That's because they are fun to draw.

Also Jenny Lerew gave some good advice on a post where I was complaining about this drawing slump I've been in- to draw with a different kind of tool when you are in a rut. So I did some drawings of French film stars using a PENCIL!! Oh wait I lied, the first one is in pen.

I haven't drawn with a pencil in like 2 years. It took a long time to find one in the house.

Drawing with a pencil again was fun. I don't think these drawings removed me from my slump, but I like that they look pretty different from the drawings I've been posting lately. Jenny is a smart girl.

Wow, this one is weird. I'm not bothering to put the names of the actresses because the likenesses are really quite crappy.

That's all for those. OK now I need help (again).

My eye has been twitching for 3 days straight now!!!!!! It's really driving me bonkers. What have I done to deserve this?? Is there a weird concoction I need to make to force it away, or an incantation I can say at midnight? Is there a special eye twitch god who is angry and needs to be appeased? Seriously, can anyone tell me how to get rid of it? I'm going nutty here!

P.S. My hair is pretty long and red now. Time flies, doesn't it??

P.P.S. A new Skadi is up on Dumm Comics, you can see what happens when I try to draw men!

Playing with profiles

Whenever I go for long periods of time without thinking very hard about drawing or studying, I go back into generic mode. Lately, tons of profiles exactly like these have been showing up on post-it notes, shopping lists, etc.

BORING!
Time for me to do some weird drawings!

I know not everyone is into seeing study drawings, but I figured I ought to try and post more often, even if it's just stuff like this.

DURR!

More profiles

I guess I ought to start off this post by saying that the pictures I've posted on this blog are all horrible examples of what I'm ultimately trying to do with my drawings. It's not my intention at all to draw semi-realistic girls all the time, but I still think my more cartoony stuff is too bland and lacking in design. Hopefully I'll turn out to be right in assuming that drawing real girl faces will get me where I want to be.
So anyhow, here are some new profiles, this time drawn without reference. Like I said before, it's been really difficult to break away from the conventional cute girl profile that I've been drawing for years, but when I try practicing more specific faces from reference, they come out without much cartooniness. These came out pretty cartoony, but they don't look like specific people, which bugs me.
I kind of like how these two turned out, even though they're just floating heads on white paper.

I hope someday I'll be able to combine cartooniness with the specificness of a real girl's face without having to rely on happy accidents. I'm discouraged that most my drawings that I like are a result of being distracted or making a drunken mistake with the pen.

Profiles

I think it's hard enough trying to draw unique looking girls, but it's even harder to draw them in profile. I definately have a sort of standard, generic profile that I always draw over and over, and I'm trying to rid myself of that habit! So far it's not working out that great. It's hard to find reference for unique profiles, also. If anyone knows a good source that doesn't include taking spy pictures of strangers at the mall, let me know!

When I drew these I was consciously trying to make the two profiles at the bottom different from one another, but they turned out pretty similar anyhow. At least they sort of differ from my normal profile design.
