Lately I'm tired of my own drawings. Drawing is still fun, but I'm ready for some change. I've been kind of trying to break out of my normal drawing habits, but it's not easy.
I like doodling with pens that are super fine right now. I skip over attempting any sort of construction or planning and just draw straight ahead. The drawings come out wonky and maybe a bit cold, like the two above, but I like them.
Those two aren't anything new at all, just my same stuff as usual. I think they're kind of cute though.
Some more extra tiny Luna Lovegood doodles! She's so cute.Ok!! So here is the exciting stuff! I just reread Chris Blain's "Gus and his Gang", and I want to share it with anyone who hasn't seen it yet. These drawings are so beautiful.
Sorry about the lousy scans!
It's probably obvious, but the comic is about cowboy outlaws and their various adventures with crime and women.
Soooo good. I wish so bad I could draw this cool.
I like to hope that eventually I'll start picking up some influence from these comics. I don't like trying to force myself into other drawing styles that I'm not that familiar with though. I mean, it's one thing to push yourself in a new direction and try new things, but trying too hard to purposefully emulate another artist never feels right to me (unless it's just for practice or studying or something). Looking at these, I'm both really excited by the drawings, but also defeated feeling.Maybe later on I'll post some more about cool comics I like right now, if people like these. There's a lot though.BONUS PINK! I love this design! I wish I made it up, but I didn't. She's from this other amazing comic, which I'm pretty sure is called "Tete Noire." Go buy it, and get "Gus and His Gang" too! And all the other stuff by those artists! :)
Ok, back to work!
I can't write too much tonight cause I gotta get back to work, but I wanted to post some of the "Miss Pas Touche" fan art I did a couple weeks ago when I bought the comics. I am totally crazy about these books. The story is a murder mystery that takes place in a 1930's brothel. I was able to understand the story pretty well even though it was in French, but there is also a translated version you can find on Amazon. Here is the second book (I think two are available now, and I've heard of a third one coming out):
I am so envious of artists who can make books like this. It'd be my dream job to do this kind of thing. I hope I get the time someday to learn about storytelling and comic making. OK anyhow, here's some fan doodles!

The main character, Blanche, is really really fun to draw. She's very cute but a bit neurotic and shrill. Her little friend Annette is fun to draw too, but I can't get her body type quite right.
I got artsy fartsy and drew these on some left over tissue paper.
More post-its!! My new favorite canvas.
That's all for now. Nothing too sparkly or shiny. I've been working a lot, and I've run out of old doodles to post, so I'm not sure when the next time I'll get to draw is. :( Hopefully I'll be able to post more about the cool comics I'm into soon, and share some more fan art and doodles. Thanks for coming back guys!
If you read Dumm Comics, you've already seen these, but I wanted to post them here so they could all be together in one place! This comic is my first attempt to do a full "story," with a beginning, middle and end. Luke still helped a lot of course...he helped me with making the layouts pretty, designed the backgrounds, and came up with the color scheme. I came up with the idea, the designs, and drew about 85% of the layouts. If you haven't already read this, I hope you like it!

This thing took a lot of after-work hours to make! Some of the man/cannibal designs are a bit lame, but I'm happy anyhow, because it's out of my comfort zone to try and draw that kind of thing. Drawing those tards ended up being the funnest part though, actually.
we are smart

Some extra info- a lot of the side characters in this, like Ethoch and the Cannibal Queen (is she the kings wife, daughter, or both?), are crossover characters from another personal project I haven't shown around much yet.

Moongirls and comic fanart is still coming soon!
***UPDATE FOR FRIEND CHRISTINE***
These are from "The Rabbi's Cat," which is a wonderful story, with beautiful drawings that is sometimes funny and sometimes sad. People who are turned off by Dungeon might like these instead! I love them both. Joann Sfar invented a completely unique and wonderful way of drawing cats, it's really amazing to me. You can tell he loves his cat in real life, who is the model for the Rabbi's cat.
interesting and wonderful
lovely
adorable and sad
hilarious and cute
**UPDATE OVER! **Ok!! I realize I might look dumb for only just discovering this guy, and probably half the people reading this know more than I do about french comics, or any comics for that matter...but I'm just so excited I have to talk about it here.Joann Sfar has done a whole bunch of comics...I've been reading them like crazy every moment I have that isn't spent working. There are a whole bunch I really like, including "The Rabbi's Cat," "The Little Vampire," and "Vampire Loves," but the one that I'm going nuts over is this one called "Dungeon," which is co-written and drawn with Lewis Trondheim, who is also really good. I've sucked down the entire available Dungeon series in the past week.
It's impossible to get into everything here, but it mostly revolves around a dungeon and the folks who work there doing the dirty work. The story goes on and on, and constantly changes directions, as do the characters, which to me is really entertaining. There's no reset button per page- the characters grow and change. Right now my comic "Skadi" has a one page format with a gag (maybe) at the end of each one, and then next week's is usually unrelated. I think it's good practice for learning, and its certainly fun to do, but it's not the kind of storytelling I really enjoy.
I love the characters in it. They are funny and likable and weird. The comic isn't "edgy" in some fake modern or trendy way, it's just a really good story. It also doesn't take itself too seriously, although since the characters are so cool, you do find yourself all wrapped up in their dramas and adventures. Or at least, I did!
I really love the pages above!! It's sort of sad though, actually I don't know too many people who read these sorts of things. Luke does though, so at least I don't have to obsess alone. I think I really really like comics. I don't know all that much about them, or how to make a long series, but I would love to be a storyteller like Joann Sfar or Peter Bagge. I would really like to give it a try someday. I would like to think I have it in me, but it seems like a gigantic challenge.Ok ok, read this part too!!

Hee hee hee, so good. When I find something I love as much as this comic, I get totally wrapped up in it and obsessed. The funny thing is, when I first saw this comic like a year or 2 ago, I didn't give it a second glance...I was like "eh, it looks so-so but I don't wanna get into it." How I regret my ways!!! It's not so-so, it's wonderful. I was a fool!!!I'm kind of curious to know what comics people like to read. Being part of the animation crowd, you'd think more of us would read comics, but it's not as common as you'd think. I know a handful who are crazy into Superhero stuff (I think I might like superhero comics, but it's so intimidating to get into! There's too much to jump into!) and some who like underground stuff (don't give me anything angsty and serious! Ick!). Are comics like "Dungeon" and "Hate" popular?? They must be, but I don't know many people who sit down and read them cover to cover. Well there's a lot more to say, but I am tired and need to go to bed as there is work tomorrow. I will leave you with this drawing I did for my friend Ray, who taught me how to ink, and who likes puke. I like Ray. He's one of the good ones!
Ok goodnight! Go buy and read comics!!
**** PRE-BEDTIME UPDATE****P.S. Joann Sfar draws nice girls. :)
