more sketchbook stuff.

Yow. A combination of too much work and not enough sleep has made it hard to draw, or find inspiration. I'm gonna hopefully post some Scott Pilgrim drawings soon, once I finish watching the DVD.

Anyone have suggestions for how to get inspired? :)

Here are some semi-recent drawings from my last sketchbook. I like them, and I hope you do too.

Ok! Thanks for coming back! Don't work too hard! And don't forget to visit my Tumblr every once in a while...the link is on the side there. UuU

New year, new Tumblr!

I've been pretty swamped lately, and haven't had a lot of time to dedicate to personal projects and drawing. It makes me blue to be posting less on this blog, but to make up for it I've started a Tumblr, dedicated to all the art that's too weird or crappy to be posted here.

There will be post-it doodles...

...and drawings done while watching movies or TV...

...and weird drawings of murderers...

...and little work-break drawings...

...and probably lots of other little weird things will go there, like photos, failed comic ideas, and drawings done with friends.

But just cause I'm starting this new thing doesn't mean I'm gonna totally abandon this blog. Hopefully I'll have something nice to show here soon.

Hope you like the new Tumblr! It's easy to get to...http://katiejrice.tumblr.com.
Go check it out! (^u^)

Draw? Huh...? Wha...?

Yow...It's been a long time since I last posted. I've got some good reasons though...one is that I'm doing storyboards again, which is a pretty time consuming job. I'm also distracted by some new good things in my life. Also my scanner is broken, so I can only show drawings I did a while ago...

Just more dive bar drawings for now. I don't like posting the same type of stuff over and over, but I do kinda like these drawings.

This page has some Christines at the bottom (click the link...go on, do it!).

A long lady with a weird outfit.

Buurrrr...that's all for now, besides some new Skadi stuff...

I'm working on another longer storyline, with a new character. This is her! Click the picture to go to the first part of the story.

There's also Skadi wallpapers for your computer desktop, if you'd like 'em! Click, click, click!

Thanks for reading...I'll be back with a fixed scanner and some more original stuff soon, I hope! Don't give up on me!

More sketchbook stuff and dive bar drawings

Yikes, I really should be posting something different by now, but alls I got are sketchbook drawings right now. No time for experiments or fancy cleaned up stuff. Here's a little post-it drawing of me being weird.

I have all this weird nervous energy lately. It wants to bust out and make me behave badly.

Typical dive bar doodles:

I wish I hadn't colored in the left girl's clothing, and just left it white.

More of the same, though I like these colors, and the three profiles at the bottom...

Music is always my main motivator for drawing, but it's been my main motivator for everything lately, including getting out of bed and moving about and all that. I've done some weird music inspired drawings lately. Maybe my next post will be about that.

Thanks for coming back!

Dive bar doodles

Going to local dive bars (the quieter ones) and drawing is a nice after work activity. I like the girl in the upper right corner.

Part of me wants to do some finished/polished art, but it's hard to get motivated to do it. With new work and a lot of life changes, just drawing is hard to do sometimes. Hopefully soon I'll take a break from messy sketchbook stuff, even though it's the most fun stuff to make.

Weird coloring! I colored the ones I liked more blue in the hope that they'd stand out kind of. Oh, by the way, I am feeling better now. ^u^

Here's an extra treat: an online-digital-midnight jam comic I made with Pen Ward. He did the first panel, then I did the second one, etc etc. Lotsa fun! Thanks Pen.

Thanks for reading! Time for sleeeeeeeeep...

Feral forest girls

It's taken me a long time to update! I've been going through some pretty drastic life changes, so I haven't had much time to draw or be on the internet. Finding inspiration is a little difficult right now, so here are some sketchbook drawings from the beautiful and teeny leather bound journal that Brandy got me from the renaissance faire.

I mentioned this interesting journal earlier- the paper in it is so nice...the way my normal markers and pens react to it are surprising and different, and fun to play with.

This whole book is reserved for feral forest girl types. :)

I drew this one at the Huntington Gardens with friend Christine. That place is nice for drawing.

Puppy fat.

Here's a photo of my pretty journal:

A girl and a creature. The pose of the girl is inspired by a 70's photo of my pretty mom .

This last one is my favorite! I'm hoping to post more soon. I'm in a pretty bad rut again, but hopefully it'll go away soon. Hope everyone had a fun 4th! ^u^

LoTR nerdy fun time game

**** EDIT
Chloe was the first person to get all the characters right, so if you want to know who everyone is, check her comment! ^u^

Play my Lord of the Rings identification game, and win...the knowledge that you are a big nerd just like me! These are all drawn pretty fast, trying to get the faces down before the scene changes on the TV, so some are more recognizable than others I think.

And don't feel bad if you aren't familiar with the movies, you don't have to guess if you don't want to! ^u^

I left out a lot of main characters, just to confuse you. Actually that's a lie, I just didn't feel like drawing certain characters, and failed too hard at other ones. -__-;

I like this next one, but I bet no one gets it!

OK that's it!! But here's some of the full pages, since these ones above are all chopped up.

I realize I've been posting a lot of the same types of drawings lately, so I'm gonna try to change things up soon, and maybe try to do some more polished drawings, or who knows. I'm not gonna think about it right now! Thanks fer participatin'!

I have seen the light

I have a new inspiration for drawing lately...sketchbooks!

I used to hate sketchbooks. The idea of having all your drawings, good or bad, all bound together was intimidating. The few times I used them, I felt like every drawing had to be perfect, or the book would be ruined. Instead, I always drew on plain copy paper, allowing me to discard any crappy drawings, and keep only the ok ones. Then I'd organize them in giant binders and analyze them months later.

Lately though I've been drawing exclusively in sketchbooks, and actually enjoying the combination of drawings I like and drawings I totally failed at. Sketchbooks aren't for showing off, or being perfect, they're a tool so that you can draw whenever and where ever.

Here's my favorite type- Moleskine makes them, but they're thinner and flimsier. I've heard much more advanced artists than myself give them a bad review because of the way marker reacts to the paper, but personally I love them!

Sketchbooks are even something like diaries- they have weird notes written in them, phone numbers, drawings from friends, really bad drawings done while out drinking and being silly with buddies, etc. Each one has it's share of doodles, studies, successful experiments, and ridiculously silly art. Each one is dated and numbered, and I decorate them haphazardly with whatever is around in the house so I know which is which. Each one tells a personal and accurate story about what was important to me during that particular month.

Here's a random sketchbook page with an ink/brush experiment, an assortment of hillbillies and forest girls, my cannibal queen character, some cats, and a weird Gandalf/Frodo combo...the cluster of weird little hamburger type things at the top is me trying to figure out how to draw Sean Astin's weird lips (aka Sam from LoTR). Sometimes the least glamorous pages are my favorite ones.

I recommend giving sketchbooks a try to anyone who used to have the same phobia I had!

This is my favorite sketchbook right now, a gift from friend Brandy from the Renaissance Faire:

It's a handmade leather book that is filled with the strangest cotton paper. I think it will take me a long time to complete it, so I'm only drawing forest folk and elfin types in it, and using my dinkier sketchbooks for everything else.

The pens and markers I'm used to using react in strange and unpredictable new ways on this paper, and it's really cool. I'll probably do a post with better photos/scans of the drawings in here later.

This is kind of a weird and artless post, but I'm actually really excited about these things. I've been drawing more than usual, and having more fun. I did almost a whole book worth of Lord of the Rings drawings, so I'll probably post those later on, too.

Check back later! Sorry for the wordy post! ^u^
