a decade of doodles

First drawing of 2010! It's my friend Sibylle, in a very Ai Yazawa influenced style. :)

A lot has changed in a decade! I decided to post up a few drawings from the last 10 years, and say a little about what was going on with each year. Kind of a cheesy idea, but personally, I like seeing other people's older drawings! Everyone with a blog should post their weirdest drawings from 2000!

2000

In 2000, my favorite artists were Ai Yazawa and Shane Glines. I'm still super influenced by them today. I made tons of those weird paper dolls!

2001

Lets get by 2001 quickly. This was my year for super weird Photoshop monstrocities.

2002

2002 is when I worked for Spumco doing layout, so construction became really important to learn. This whole year was full of drawings that were labored over and are sort of stiff. It also shaped how I would draw for years and years. I'm not sure I'll ever shake the Spumco influence completely.

2003

2003 is another weird year- I was really into mutant girls with elongated heads, topless people, and forest creatures.

2004

I kind of consider 2004 to be the year I had a drawing breakthrough. I suddenly started drawing fast and loose and making happy accidents instead of stiff, laborious looking drawings. These look a bit primitive to me now, but I remember how happy I was to be drawing back then, and kind of feel envious of those times. 2004 is also when I started getting back into coloring with markers.

2005

This year was the most productive ever!! I did tons and tons of drawings. I had a total obsession with teeth, weird hairdos, and Japanese fashion in 2005. 2005 is also when I started this blog, and when I worked on designing and doing layout for a video, which meant having to practice construction again.

2006

I got back into anime and manga in 2006. All my drawings are really weird and wiggly from this year! I like a lot of them more than what I am drawing now, though.

2007

2007 was all about vampires, and hand inking.

2008

In 2008 I started my hillbilly project, abandoned ballpoints for new types of pens, got a cintiq, inked and colored half the drawings I did on the cintiq, and started web-publishing my weekly comic "Skadi" with Luke. I liked 2008.

2009

2009 was all post-its and cats! I also tried hard this year to draw things other than girls, and to draw less cutesy. 2009 was a great year because I got into lots of new artists, including all the people who make comics in France.

Anyhow, happy new year, guys!! I hope 2009 was fun for everyone, and that 2010 is even better!

It's holiday time!!

I love winter, gift giving, cold weather, warm coats, snow...this time of December is a guaranteed happy time for me because I go to the mountains to see family. I hope it is happy for everyone else this year too!

I don't know if I'll be able to post again before the new year, so if not, I want to be cheesy and say THANK YOU to everyone who has ever given up 5 seconds of their lives to look at this blog and say something nice to me, and THANK YOU to all the amazing artists, young and old, who have been kicking ass and feeding candy to my eyes all year 'round. Also, thanks to everyone who supported my etsy store!

Winter time elf friends

I have been in a weird mood lately, hence random doodles like this one. Luke thinks we should put this elfy ice queen in a Skadi story. What do you think?

I'm feeling silly today, so here is something extra stupid for you.

The doodles above are idea sketches for a future (maybe) Skadi story, and some super dumb Luna and Baby Cat "observations."

Also, here is one of my characters, Everlovin', hanging out with some fox guy. Expect to see more of her in the new year!

Have a nice holiday, everyone! (UuU)

P.S. In case anyone is curious as the where the last two blog posts went- I deleted them since there is no longer any original art left on my Etsy, so there was no need to be plugging them.

Christmas Axe Murder

Here is a late holiday story for you, because right now the only acceptable drawings I have to show are from secret projects! It was inspired because my brother Pete and I found a cool looking axe in the backseat.

When winter winds blow cold and food is low, one must look elsewhere for meat!

shhh...

unsuspecting...

RARRRR!!!!

There is no where to run...

The first blow

Anguish

Pulling the axe out is hard work...

nom nom nom

You'd be next, but this meat will last me the whole winter...

Adding insult to injury

stab stab

*phew*

Dump the body where it's closer to home...

One last bite to tide me over for the time being

After a hearty meal I enjoy rolling around next to my food.

Shit!! He's not all the way dead!!

Thanks Pete for making this with me!

Actual drawings coming soon! Work and other life stresses are making casual drawing a bit difficult at the moment, but I'm working on it!

Happy New Year!

HEY GUYS!!

***UPDATE***

I probably should have advertised this way earlier, but Dumm Comics is holding a contest! Anyone, artist or not, is invited to do their own versions of Big Pants Mouse, Through the Porthole, Skadi, 1930 Nightmare Theatre, and Earthward Ho! You can do them however you want! The ones that make us laugh the most will be featured on the site. Judging is on the 10th!

Anyhow...

I hope everyone got a break from life and enjoyed the holidays! I went to Lake Tahoe to be with my family for a whole week and had a load of much needed fun and relaxation.

Winter was really beautiful this year...check out this photo I took from the porch on Christmas morning!

I am quite at home in the snow (so long as someone else is willing to shovel it for me).

One of the best things about visiting my home this month was getting to spend so much time with my big brother Pete. He's always busy with work and music and concerts and stuff, so I don't get to see enough of him. If you like heavy metal music, you should
check him out!

I think all the cartoonists in LA should revolt and force the studios to move to the lake.

One more thing...

Some people have written me nice notes lately wishing me a happy Christmas and stuff, but I haven't been able to write back because I didn't have internet during my vacation. I'm really sorry, please give me a bit to calm down- I went from non-stop work to non-stop relaxing and it's kind of a shock!

I've got some posts planned for next year...here are some of the ideas:

1. That design theory/Disney reject post, if I can get smart enough to write it right
2. A lovely photo story about an axe murder, starring me and my brother
3. A new extra stupid comic...here's a preview:

OK!!!! Hope you guys will come back next year, again sorry for the lack of posts and competent responses! Have fun tonight and kiss someone at midnight!
